Planning Your Diorama

A well-planned diorama tells a story. The base size needs to frame your subject with enough surrounding scene to create atmosphere without wasting space. Terrain features, vegetation, water effects and lighting all need to be considered before you start building.

Materials for diorama work include plaster or lightweight filler for terrain, static grass and foliage for vegetation, two-part resin or acrylic water effects for ponds and streams, and LEDs with resistors for lighting effects. Knowing quantities in advance saves waste and ensures you have everything to hand when you need it.

Figure placement follows the rule of thirds and natural grouping — soldiers move in squads, civilians cluster around points of interest. Realistic spacing depends on your scale and the scene you are depicting. Our calculators help you plan all of these elements so your finished diorama looks convincing from every angle.
