What is the best baseboard construction method?

Open-frame construction using 50x25mm softwood is the most popular. It is lighter than a flat top, allows scenery below track level, and is easy to modify. Flat-top (9mm ply on a frame) is simpler to build but heavier and limits scenic depth.

How wide should a baseboard be?

For OO gauge, 600mm is a practical maximum for single-sided access. If you can reach from both sides, up to 1200mm works. For N gauge, you can work narrower at 400-500mm. Never make it wider than your comfortable arm reach (about 700mm from the front edge).

How many sections should I divide the layout into?

Each section should be 1200-1500mm long for portability and storage. Sections longer than 1800mm become unwieldy. If you transport your layout to exhibitions, limit section width to fit through doorways (typically 750mm). Use bolts or dowels to align sections.

What timber should I use for baseboards?

Use 50x25mm PSE (planed smooth edges) softwood for frames. 9mm birch plywood for flat tops. 5mm cork sheet for track bed. Avoid MDF for frames as it is heavy and absorbs moisture. Hardwood is unnecessary and expensive — softwood is perfectly adequate.
