How long should a model railway platform be?

Ideally, the platform should be slightly longer than your longest train. In OO gauge, a 4-coach train with loco is about 1280mm. If space is limited, a selective compression platform at 70% of train length still looks acceptable.

What height should a model platform be?

In OO gauge, platform height should be approximately 13mm above rail level. In N gauge it is about 7mm. This represents the standard UK platform height of approximately 915mm. The platform face should be about 2mm from the track centre.

What is selective compression?

Selective compression means making the platform shorter than scale length while keeping it looking correct. A platform at 70% of train length looks fine because viewers focus on the train-platform interface, not the exact length match.

How do I model the platform ramp?

Platform ends typically have a gentle ramp down to track level. Model this at about 1:8 slope (rise:length). For OO gauge with 13mm platform height, the ramp is about 104mm long. Use card, balsa wood, or commercial platform kits.
