What thread should I use for model rigging?

For 1:72 scale, use 0.05-0.08mm invisible thread or stretched sprue. For 1:48, use 0.08-0.12mm monofilament or EZ Line. For 1:35 and larger, use 0.12-0.2mm fine thread or soft wire. The thread should look to scale and not overpower the model.

How much extra thread should I allow for knots?

Allow 10-15% extra for knots and attachment wastage. Each attachment point uses 5-10mm of thread for tying or gluing. For CA glue attachment, less wastage is needed than for knots. Always cut more than you think you need.

What are turnbuckles on model rigging?

Turnbuckles are the tensioning devices on real rigging lines. On models, they are represented by small photo-etch or cast metal parts, or can be simulated by small blobs of CA glue or paint. They add significant realism, especially on biplanes.

How do I tension model rigging?

EZ Line and stretched sprue have natural elasticity and self-tension. For rigid thread, attach one end with CA glue, pull to the correct tension, and glue the other end. Work from the centre of the model outward. Rigid lines can be stiffened with diluted PVA.
