How Much Does a Can of Spray Paint Cover?

Quick Answer

A 100ml hobby spray can fully paints roughly 0.5 to 1 m²; a 400ml can covers about 2 to 4 m²

0.5 to 1 m² is 5,000 to 10,000 cm²: enough to fully paint about 2 to 3 car bodies at 1:24, and it stretches to several 1:72 or 1:48 kits. Coverage scales with volume, so a 400ml can is simply 4 × the 100ml figure. The table and per-coat maths are below.

The 100ml row is our spray coverage calculator benchmark; the other rows scale it linearly by volume (180 ÷ 100 = 1.8×, 400 ÷ 100 = 4×). These are rough estimates: actual coverage swings widely with thinning, air pressure, spray distance and coat thickness, so round up rather than run dry mid-coat. Figures are for scale-model aerosols and thin model coats, not for household decorating or automotive refinishing, which use different paints and much heavier coats.

The Per-Coat Maths

Paint needed = surface area × coverage rate × number of coats. For a rattle can the calculator's default rate is 0.015ml per cm² per coat, so one thin coat from a 100ml can stretches across 100 ÷ 0.015 ≈ 6,700 cm² (about 0.67 m²). Worked example: a 1:72 fighter has roughly 150 to 300 cm² of paintable surface. Taking 200 cm² and 3 coats, that is 200 × 0.015 × 3 = 9ml per model, so a 100ml can could in theory handle ten or so small kits; in practice masking, colour changes and test sprays mean fewer. Why Spray Cans Use More Paint Than an Airbrush

An airbrush is the most efficient way to apply model paint, at roughly 1ml per 100 cm² per coat (0.01ml/cm²). Rattle cans use about 50% more (0.015ml/cm²) because of overspray, and brush painting (0.012ml/cm²) falls between the two. The gap is bigger than it looks on the shelf: a 400ml aerosol is only around 30% paint, with the rest solvent and propellant, and 20 to 50% of what leaves the nozzle is lost to overspray. That is why a 400ml primer can and a 17 to 23ml acrylic dropper bottle are less different in real paint content than the labels suggest.

How Many Coats Should You Allow For?

Most model paints need 2 to 3 thin coats for full coverage. Light colours over a dark primer may need 3 to 4, while primer itself usually needs only 1 to 2. Always apply several thin coats rather than one thick one: thick coats drown panel lines and fine detail.
